Florida’s I-4 Named Deadliest In U.S.

Published:

A new study found that I-4 running from Tampa to Daytona Beach is the deadliest interstate in the nation.

The study from EverDrive used raw data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2010 to 2015.

They found that there were 1.41 fatalities per mile on the 132 mile interstate.

Distracted driving and tourism are thought to contribute to the danger on I-4. According to Glenn Victor of the Florida Safety Council, “What’s the first thing they do when they get off the plane? They rent a car that they’re not familiar with and they’re on their GPS, so they’re looking at the phone and their GPS which of course is a distraction while their driving.

EverDrive states that Florida ranks as the second worst state in the nation for distracted driving, with the average motorist making 1.4 phone uses per trip — significantly higher than the national average of 1.1 uses per trip.

The study ranked I-45 in Texas the second most dangerous and I-17 in Arizona the third most dangerous highways.
