Tennessee law enforcement has just started enforcing the “slow poke” law designed to improve safety and reduce traffic back ups.
The law, which went into effect July 1, forbids drivers from using the left lane unless they are passing other vehicles.
Troopers On The Lookout For Left Lane Lingerers
Tennessee State Troopers say that they plan to be on the alert for left lane drivers. If cited, violators can expect to face a misdemeanor charge and a $50 fine.
There are a few cases during which the slow poke law will not be enforced:
- During poor weather conditions.
- If there are obstructions in the non-passing lane.
- If a driver is trying to avoid traffic merging into a non-passing lane.
- If highway design requires a driver to be in the left lane to make an exit or to turn left.
- If a traffic control device makes it necessary to drive in the left lane.
Lawmakers hope that the law will improve highway safety by decreasing traffic backups, which increase the chances of a crash.
