Sudden Snow Squall Leads To Massive I-78 Pileup

The crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-78 in Bethel Township around 9:30 a.m. Police say a sudden “freak” whiteout snowstorm caused drivers to suddenly slow or stop, ending in a pileup involving twelve commercial vehicles and dozens of passenger vehicles.

Commercial Vehicle Driver Among Those Killed

Seventy-three people were injured and three others lost their lives. Among those killed was 57 year old Tennessee based truck driver Alfred D. Kinnick, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The highway was closed in both directions Saturday and reopened on Sunday.

Investigators say it could take weeks or even a month to fully analyze the cause of the pileup.
