XPO Logistics Workers In Illinois, Connecticut, Vote To Unionize

Published:

Drivers and warehouse workers in two XPO Logistics terminals have voted to join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

In Aurora, Illinois, 74 drivers voted to unionize — the first group of former Con-way drivers to do so since XPO acquired the company last year.

In North Haven, Connecticut, 127 warehouse workers voted to unionize, making them the first group of warehouse workers to form a union at XPO in the U.S. This was a former Con-way Freight location.

Former Con-way Drivers Unionize To Take A Stand Against Allegedly Unfair XPO Treatment

The Teamsters view the decision to unionize as a major stand for worker’s rights: “The workers at XPO in Aurora and in North Haven, Connecticut sent the company a message that ‘enough is enough. The workers are tired of being mistreated and not having a say in their work lives.

One of the former Conway drivers, Cliff Phillips, says that the XPO takeover has not been good for drivers and that the move to unionize came as a result of unjust treatment: “Our victory is important to all of us because we have seen how XPO operates since taking over Con-way Freight. XPO is treating us unfairly, denying us any voice on the job and just seems interested in the bottom line. But now we will fight back as Teamsters.

XPO says that they are working to determine if the move to unionize was legal. They also point out that the number of workers who voted to unionize is a very small percentage of XPO’s 44,000 employees.

An analyst at Stephens Inc says that the number of XPO employees who have voted to unionize isn’t yet enough to indicate that the company could unionize at a national level.
