Volvo Sets Semi Speed World Record, Hits 171 MPH

Published:

Today Volvo revealed that it’s 2400 horsepower semi “Iron Cross” has beaten two world records, pushing the custom truck to speeds of 171 m.p.h during their latest video stunt.

Volvo said that the records were broken in June at the site of a former airfield in Sweden with driver Boije Ovebrink behind the wheel of the 10,000 pound truck. Ovebrink has over 20 years of experience racing cars and trucks.

While almost every part of the Iron Cross was custom built, the “I-Shift” dual clutch transmission is the same one found in Volvo’s normal FH truck lineup (though the clutch is reinforced). The heavily modified D13 engine engine boasts 4 turbo chargers that help it to produce 2400 horsepower and 4425 lb-ft of torque.

Volvo claimed the world speed record in two sprints — covering 500 meters in 13.71 seconds and clocking in at just 21.29 seconds for the full kilometer. Ovebrink was able to push the truck to speeds of 171.5 m.p.h. during the record-breaking attempt.

As always, Volvo has provided you with dramatic video footage of their latest stunt. You can watch it below.
