I-465 Closed Indefinitely After Semi Hauling Car Crusher Causes Partial Bridge Collapse

Published:

Indiana State Police say that the northbound lanes of I-465 in Indianapolis could be closed for weeks after a car crusher hauled by a semi underwent some sort mechanical issue that caused it to strike an overpass, causing a partial bridge collapse.

The crash happened this morning around 8:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-465 when a semi hauling a car crusher struck the U.S. 36/Rockville Road overpass. According to early reports from State Troopers, some sort of mechanical malfunction occurred with the car crusher as the truck was going under the overpass, causing the bridge strike.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Two people were hurt as a result of the crash. One person was treated on scene while the other was transported to the hospital to be treated for a broken arm. The truck driver was not hurt.

Police say that several vehicles were hit by debris that came crashing down after the bridge strike.

Troopers say that the bridge will have to be partially demolished as result of the crash and that travelers should expect serious delays.

INDOT announced that all northbound lanes of I-465 at Exit 9 could be closed for at least a week. Traffic is being detoured to eastbound or westbound I-70.
