If your routes ever take you into Mexico, this little place on Highway 19 (at the 70km mark) heading to Pescadero from Cabo looks like it would be worth a stop for some delicious truck stop eats! According to writer, Rie Yamaoka of Afar - this restaurant, which is connected to a mini market is located in the middle of an industrial-looking stretch.

The restaurant is a family establishment called, Neuevea Atdretes. The food has received excellent reviews!

A driver identification platform called DriveID has just recently been released in Las Vegas. Drive ID was created by a Louisiana company called Cellcontrol to block the driver of a vehicle from using their cellphone. This of course, only works if the driver has registered with the DriveID service. The cellphone blocking capabilities of this product strictly apply to a vehicle’s driver – passengers will have the ability to text, talk, and browse freely.

The device stands alone, and functions using solar power. It is located on the windshield of the vehicle, and uses bluetooth technology to enforce that the driver will not be able to drive whilst distracted by their cellular device.

According to chief technology officer, Joe Breaux – the device accurately determines where the cell phone and the driver are in relation to the driver’s seat. – According to Breaux, fleets are jumping at the idea and the opportunity to decrease company liability and benefit that the device could provide to both the company, drivers, and everyone out on the road.

Another great motivator for fleet owners is the benefit the product has when it comes to Hours of Service regulations. Instead of using a key fob or a pin code to report drive time, the Cellcontrol technology does the reporting.

According to Breaux, “Our sales increase over 400 percent year over year, and next year our sales are project to increase at a rate greater than that,” – However, the company has not yet set a price point for the DriveID product.

Finally! CBS News has done a segment on “Teens & Trucks” to raise awareness for young drivers, and to teach them how to share the road, and drive around trucks the right way!

As you may or may not have heard by now, Amanda Kloehr of Virginia was involved in a serious accident with a tractor trailer. Kloehr admits that she was distracted by a multitude of things before slamming into the back of the truck in front of her – and is now speaking out to raise the awareness of her peers.

According to CBS News: Kloehr says, “I was looking at a number of things: my cell phone, my GPS, the radio, all of these things in my car. And I looked away from the road long enough to not realize the tractor-trailer stopped and I hit the back of him going about 65, 70 miles an hour,” said Kloehr. “Even after 20 surgeries, this is what happened to my face.”

In addition to the important message that this teen is spreading, we’re excited to mention that a Maryland State Police officer is working with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) on a “Teens & Trucks” initiative.

In his interview with CBS news he mentions key things for drivers to remember when traveling near trucks including the “NO” zones, the dangers of following closely or neglecting to factor the time it takes for a trucks to stop, and turbulence.

Don’t Cut Off Trucks.

• Total stopping distance is very different for a large truck than a passenger car. So know that cutting it close with a truck can cut your life short.

Stay Out of the Truck’s Blind Spots/NO Zones.

• Trucks have very large blind spots.  Do not stay in a truck’s blind spots.

Keep a Safe Distance.

• While it is never safe to tailgate any vehicle on the highway, following too close is particularly dangerous around large trucks and buses because the size of these vehicles prevents you from seeing the road ahead and having sufficient time to react to slowing or stopped traffic or another obstacle.

Trucks Make Wide Turns.

• Because of their large size, remember that a truck making a right turn may first swing left to clear the corner.  Conversely, a truck making a left turn may first swing right to clear vehicles and other objects on its left side.  Expect this and be prepared!

It’s finally happened – texting and driving is officially killing more teens annually than drunk driving. According to a study conducted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center – 3,000 teens are dying annually from texting while driving drunk is causing 2,700 deaths annually.

According to CBS New York, 50% of students are still texting while driving despite televised public service announcements, and national conversation about the issue. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 69% of adults 18-64 admit to talking on their cell phones while operating their vehicles, while 31% of the same grouping confess to reading and responding to text messages and emails.

Cases of Distracted Driving Include:

• Texting
• Using a cell phone or smartphone
• Eating and drinking
• Talking to passengers
• Grooming
• Reading, including maps
• Using a navigation system
• Watching a video
• Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that due to distracted driving, more than 9 people are killed on a daily basis in the United States.

These numbers are startling, and we have to wonder if enough is being done to combat the issue. Although multiple states have banned texting while driving, it just doesn’t seem to be enough of a deterrent – especially for young drivers.
