Reporting Dangerous Drivers

Published:

We understand that no one wants to be a snitch, but sometimes long haul truckers witness something so drastic that something has to be done. Maybe it’s a clip n’ run, maybe it’s a new driver who doesn’t know how to tie down free-standing freight correctly – whatever the case, we want all drivers to know where to go online or by phone to report something immediately without getting filtered through the carrier’s public service line.

FMCSA’s Online Safety Complaint Form

The first stop you can make if you have quick access to a computer is here:
http://nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov/HomePage.asp

It should look like this. The page gives users four complaint options, but truck drivers should only be concerned with the 1st, 2nd and 4th choices.

Once you choose your type of complaint, you are given a few more options on the next page, in order to help determine a few specifics first. After you hit the “Continue” button, you will either be given an alert that tells you that the FMCSA does not handle those types of complaints, or you will be given a link to a toll-free number and a list of field offices to call so an agent will be able to determine the next course of action. The toll-free number for the FMCSA is 1-888-DOT-SAFT (368-7238).

We have also provided a list of regional office addresses and numbers below for quick reference.

If the FMCSA Safety Complaint website determines that your complaint can be taken online, it will direct you to a screen with some basic information fields. NOTICE: This online system also allows you to report the carrier you currently work for, if you feel that they are violating safety and inspection standards, or are forcing you or other drivers to do something illegal under threat of losing employment or further contracts.

We at CDL Life hope it never comes to the point where drivers are forced to file official complaints about the behavior of other drivers, other carriers or their company, but we understand this may become a reality at some point in a truck driver’s professional life. We hope you use this set of pointers wisely. Good luck truckers!
