2012 Grammy Winners | Chart Toppers

2012 could be considered the Year of British Soul. After gaining notice by the world in 2008 with her album “19,” the big, brash British songbird Adele logged a stunning sweep of awards at this year’s Grammy Awards Ceremony for her sophomore record “21.” After all was said and sung, Adele took home awards for all six of the categories she was nominated for. This ties her for the best Grammy award performance in a single year, with Beyonce being the other top earner.

Adele gave the 2012 Grammys an uplifting story of her return from near ruin last year, when her vocal cords burst during a performance, threatening to end her chart-topping career in an instant. She made her first public performance on stage with her Grammy nominated track “Rolling In the Deep” which won both Record Of the Year and Song Of the Year.

The other major story that cast a pall of tragedy and mourning over the ceremony was the unexpected death of R&B singer Whitney Houston. The Grammy producers scrambled to construct a few moments of fitting tribute to Houston, who was one of the best selling R&B singers of all time, earning six Grammys herself over the years. She had died of unknown causes in her hotel room two nights before the ceremony, after she had been rehearsing for a performance to be given at a Grammy party.
