Coming Soon To DVD – Summer 2012

Published:

Some of you long haul truckers might not have the time to spend watching some of the summer blockbusters like The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus and The Expendables 2 in proper theaters. That’s okay – DVD services like Red Box, Blockbuster and Netflix have lots of great choices coming on disc this summer.

What do we recommend for all the truck drivers out there looking for some thrills, chills or laughter? We thought you’d never ask. Of course, not all of these are family-friendly, but you probably already knew that.

Upcoming DVDs Summer 2012

Red Tails Coming May 22

Red Tails Widescreen Edition
Pre-order “Red Tails” from Amazon

Directed by Anthony Hemingway, Produced by George Lucas, Starring Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Bryan Cranston. Rated PG-13.

George Lucas may not understand how to write compelling dialog and characters, but the man knows how to shoot a dogfight scene. This is a WWII period piece about the legendary Tuskeegee Airmen, an all black flying ace unit. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, they are given the ultimate chance to show their courage. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country — and the fate of the free world.

Gone Coming May 29

Amanda Seyfried Gone DVD
Pre-order “Gone” on DVD at Amazon

Directed by Heitor Dahlia, Produced by Sidney Kimmel, Starring Amanda Seyfried and Wes Bentley. Rated PG-13

Is Jill in danger, or is she a danger to herself? This movie that plays with identity and memory keeps you guessing. Jill comes home from a night shift to discover her sister Molly has been abducted. Jill, having escaped from a kidnapping a year before, is convinced that the same serial killer has come back and taken Molly. Since the killer leaves no trace, the police don’t have any evidence and can’t help her. Afraid that Molly will be dead by sunrise, Jill sets out alone on a nail-biting chase to come face-to-face with the killer.

Act of Valor  Coming June 5

Act Of Valor DVD from Amazon
Pre-order “Act Of Valor” on DVD from Amazon

Directed by Mike McCoy, Produced by Scott Waugh, Starring unnamed Navy Seals, Rosalyn Sanchez and Emilio Rivera. Rated R.

As the marketing pitch says – this movie uses real active-duty Navy SEALS as actors and stuntmen using live ammo during firefights. The plot is fairly standard, but if you’re an action fan, you may want to take note. A Navy Seal squad goes on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent, and, in the process, takes down a complex web of terrorist cells determined to strike America at all costs.

Much of the camera work is done by quick mount HD cams on helmets, attached to armed vehicles and more. The film makers really try and put you in the center of the action.

John Carter Coming June 5

John Carter of Mars Disney Movie
Pre-order “John Carter” on Disney DVD from Amazon

Directed by Andrew Stanton, Produced by Sean Daniel, Starring Taylor Kitsch, Thomas Hayden Church, and Samantha Morton.

This is what happens when something on paper looks like a sure winner, but too many hands in the soup create a disaster. Take a classic sci-fi hero from an Edgar Rice Borroughs serial (he created Tarzan, after all), put an experienced director in the chair and hire up-and-coming action talent and…instant hit, right? Ooof. Nope. You get one of the biggest box office bombs in the history of modern cinema. Judging by box office take, more people have seen Bigfoot in person than saw this trainwreck. It lost hundreds of millions of dollars.

A war-weary, former military captain John Carter is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions. Wasn’t that the plot of Avatar? No, wait it was the plot of Stargate, right? Or…yeah, you get the picture.

If you’re still curious, here’s a 10 minute preview of “John Carter” on YouTube.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Coming June 12

Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes
Pre-order “Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows” on DVD

Directed by Guy Ritchie, Produced by Joel Silver, Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Noomie Rapace.

Robert Downey Jr. has had some good success in reviving classic crime-fighting characters. His turn as Tony Stark in the Iron Man franchise has been busting box offices for a few years now, most notably from this summer’s grand tentpole hit “The Avengers.” He is experiencing similar success with the classic Brit sleuth Sherlock Holmes, as he and director Guy Ritchie re-imagine Holmes as a slick womanizer, rather than a stuffy gumshoe.

In this continuing story of the classic franchise, there is a new criminal mastermind at large – Professor James Moriarty – and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective. Will Holmes and his faithful sidekick Dr. Watson be able to catch the dastardly professor before he brings civilization to its knees?

Get a look at how the two play off of one another in this clip from “Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows.”
