A Toronto trucker is receiving high praise this week after a daring pursuit of a dangerous driver that led to his capture. The truck driver, Trevor Pogue remained humble but thankful as he said he was just doing his job and helping keep the roadways safe. Police said they were unsure if they would have been able to apprehend the criminal, were it not for the efforts inside and outside the cab by Pogue.
On January 14th, police were in pursuit of a driver who was operating a passenger car erratically and at excessive speeds of up to 90 mph. During the chase, the driver was able to force the car of Sgt. Simon Frasier into a ditch and speed away. As Pogue saw what happened, he made the snap decision to pick up the chase while radioing other truck drivers in the area with vital information. The truckers passed this info on to law enforcement, who sent back up into the field immediately.
Then “he actually got in a foot pursuit,” Frasier said later. “[He] chased the man … keeping up his location with his fellow co-workers with his two-way radio.” This extra effort tipped the scales in police’s favor.
“It was more adrenaline than anything,” said Pogue. “Seeing what he did to a police car. [I was just] trying to help.”
Police later arrested Stephen Chitty of Toronto. He has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while under suspension.
