Hey truck drivers, we’re back with another episode of Free Movie Night. We scour the web for some of the coolest free movies that you can view while spending time parked and off the clock.
This week, it’s the story of one of the most influential rock bands in history, The Runaways.
Who are The Runaways?
The Runaways are one of the first all girl rock bands who hit it big on the national music charts. They mixed rock, punk, pop and sexual appeal to great success in the late 70s.
The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits.
With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten.
To this day, Joan Jett remains one of the iconic chick rockers from the 70s and 80s who continue to churn out hard rocking hits on her own terms. This is her story, even though it’s not over.
