Motorists traveling along Interstate 285 in Atlanta, be on the look out for variable speed limits. Atlanta’s busiest and most congested highway will soon be utilizing technology that is predicted to control the flow of traffic.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the speed limit will eventually be raised from 55 to 65.
Electronic speed limit signs will be placed along the highway and the speeds will vary depending upon the level of congestion.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will utilize the same technology that is being used successfully in Seattle. In Seattle, speed limits are increased or decreased in 5 mph increments based on congestion levels. The goal of variable speed limits to to help control the flow of traffic and reduce stop and go motorist behavior.
If variable speed limiting successfully controls the flow of traffic and eases congestion, expect to see the technology expanded to other Atlanta highways.
