Truck driver to car driver: Pay attention!
Let me set letter-writer Richard Haas straight on the truck situation on Truslow Road [“Trucks on Truslow?” March 23].There may not be commercial businesses on Truslow Road except farms, but even the farm equipment has to be overly cautious on the road because the car drivers are so busy with their GPS or cellphones they do not pay attention to what is going on around them. They are so worried that a truck is going to get in front of them.
Everyone has the “me first” thought. My suggestion is learn how to read a map. Plan your route before you leave home. And most of all, hang up and drive! How do I know this? I’m one of those truck drivers with 28 years under my belt. I drive one of those milk tankers to those farms.
My truck rolled a few years back avoiding a carload of kids who, searching for a cellphone on the floorboard, crossed the center line.I’m one of those truck drivers who leave two hours early for work because of all the car drivers who wait until the last minute and try to make up time driving like idiots.
So the next time someone wants to complain about a truck, think about the food in your stomach, the furniture you sit on, the house you live in–because if it were not for a truck to bring it, it wouldn’t be there.The day I wrote this, a pickup truck on U.S. 17 south pulled out of the intersection in front of a milk tanker, causing him to lose control and wreck. Why? Because he was trying to beat the truck.
