Peterbilt took home the trophy for the heavy duty category in the American Truck Dealers’ annual Commercial Truck competition in Las Vegas. The big winner was the Peterbilt 587 SmartWay sleeper-cab tractor.
“There’ll be a lot of smiling faces in Denton, Texas,” Peterbilt’s headquarters, Peterbilt’s general manager Bill Kozek said after receiving the award. “I’ve been on the job 30 days. I really can’t take credit for any of this,” so he singled out the Peterbilt 587 designers in the audience for praise.
Kozek took over Peterbilt after heading its sister company, Kenworth Truck. As general manager there, he had accepted the heavy duty award for 2010, won by Kenworth for a road tractor.
The Peterbilt 587 feature set tipped the scales in its favor. They were engineered using a combination of emerging technology and helpful suggestions from real professional truckers. One such feature is te innovative forward lighting system that significantly improves visibility, including more consistent light distribution, better overall road coverage and down-road visibility. Standard halogens feature a 35% increase in brightness while optional HID lights provide a 220% increase.
The Peterbilt 587 boasts a unique front-end design that smoothly diverts air over and around the streamlined hood resulting in a 1.25% fuel efficiency gain. Other cab improvements are better sightlines unsurpassed in Class 8 semi trucks.
In-cab improvements include 30″ of walk-through space between the swivel mounted seats. The Peterbilt 587 features SmartNav, a state-of-the-art navigation, diagnostic and communication module that’s touchscreen operated and geared specifically for the needs of professional truckers.
Available engines include the PACCAR MX and Cummins ISX15 models. The Cummins features a range of 400-600 hp with a maximum 2050 lb-ft of peak torque.
Traction control options include Bendix ATC or Bendix ESP packages.
