Mayor, City Council Agree: No More Semi-Trucks Downtown

Published:

Politicians in Columbiana, Alabama, have made their voices loud and clear: no more semi-trucks downtown. Earlier this month, Mayor Stancil Handley raised the issue during a Columbiana City Council meeting, calling to limit truck routes through the city center.
No More Trucks
Handley says trucks cause traffic jams and drive carelessly over curbs in the area, which has become a problem. “I really feel like we are doing the city a disservice by allowing these large trucks” to drive through the area, Handley said.
Columbiana, a city of a little less than 5,000, is 45 minutes from Birmingham, Alabama, the state’s largest city, and an hour-and-a-half from Montgomery, Alabama, the state’s capitol.
Columbiana Chief of Police Lamar Vick says, “The trucking industry does have a lot of legal pull. I would also like to seek the advice of our city attorney.”
Vick, Handley, and other members of the Columbiana City Council are committed to changing the existing driving laws in their downtown area.
“I think it’s unanimous that everyone agrees if we can keep them out of the downtown area, we should do it,” Handley said.
