The wall of ice crushed the top of Lawton’s vehicle, trapping her inside.
Other motorists stopped to help Lawton. Motorists told dispatchers Lawton was struggling to breathe.
Nick Webb of Webb’s Towing & Recovery, Anchorage, AK, was responding to another call when he happened upon Lawton’s accident and stopped to help.
Webb sprang into action and lowered the truck’s boom over Lawton’s windshield and passed a cable through the broken windshield. He then tightened the cable, which began pulling the crushed roof off of Lawton. Responders said that this action may have saved Lawton’s life.
For his efforts, Webb was awarded the American Towman medal, an honor given to those who have exhibited acts of heroism.
