Truck drivers do many great things to help others. This weekend, a group of truck drivers will join a truck parade called Trucking For a Cure. The mission of the parade is to raise funds for Relay for Life.
The parade will take place in Laruinburg, North Carolina, just off of Interstate 74, on Saturday morning. Many of the vehicles in the parade will be decorated in memory of a loved one who has battled cancer or who is currently battling cancer.

Relay for Life supporters will literally be trucking for their cause this weekend, raising funds with a truck parade in downtown Laurinburg.
“We’re always interested in spreading the mission of Relay for Life and what we’re trying to do in Scotland County and we felt this would be an excellent way to capture the public’s attention while at the same time honoring cancer survivors and paying tribute to the memory of those who have been lost,” said Relay co-chair Stewart Thomas.
The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, with some 20 trucks leaving from the visitor’s parking lot at Pate Stadium. The procession will travel down Church Street and continue northbound on Main Street before returning to the stadium.
Trucks entered range from pickup trucks to fire trucks, wreckers, and 18-wheelers, each of which will carry a memento of a loved on who has suffered from cancer.
“We will have trucks of all types that will have banners, and each truck will be dedicated in memory of someone who has lost the battle or in honor of a cancer survivor,” Thomas said.
Once the trucks return to Pate Stadium, spectators are invited to view the trucks and banners and join in the Relay spirit.
“We want to invite the public to come out and cheer the trucks on as they go down Main Street, and we also want to invite them to Pate Stadium’s visitors parking lot after the parade to see the trucks and continue the celebration,” said Thomas. “We’re really excited about it – it’s a way to continually spread the mission of Relay for Life and a way to bring the community together once again.”
This is the first year for the “Truckin’ for a Cure” fundraiser, and Thomas has been pleased with the response. Anyone who would like to enter a truck in the parade should contact him at 610-3320 by noon on Thursday. The entrants’ fee is $75 for small trucks and $125 for large trucks, with all proceeds to Relay for Life.
Downtown Deli in Laurinburg will also host a Relay fundraiser this week. “Party With a Purpose” will be held on Friday at 9 p.m. with live music from Jackie Lockamy. Donations of $5 will be accepted at the door.
Scotland Health Care System will hold a family portrait fundraiser, with photos taken Sept. 7-8. The $10 Relay donation will cover a 10 x 13, 8 x 10, two 5 x7, and eight wallet photos. Tickets can be purchased at Scotland Cancer Treatment Center.
The Relay team Guffey’s Groupies is raffling off a pig picking for 50 people, to be drawn on Sept. 22. Tickets are $5 or three for $10. Contact Angela Gallagher at [email protected].
