Two Truckers Pull Driver From Blazing Rig

Maggie Valley, North Carolina

Truck driver John Roberts, 67, of Mississippi, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 near Maggie Valley, North Carolina, shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday, when he slammed into the back of a slow-moving truck, causing three subsequent accidents.

Roberts’ truck caught fire shortly after impact. Trying to escape the burning rig, Roberts couldn’t open the doors because the force of the  impact had jammed them closed.

Fellow truck drivers Dennis Murillo, 61, and Deandre Hobby, 45, both of California, sprang into action.  One of the drivers grabbed a crowbar and the two set out to pry open Roberts’ doors.

Once the door was opened, the drivers pulled Roberts from the blazing truck.

“Those two guys deserve credit for saving his life,”  Master Trooper Travis Crisp told the Citizen Times.

The wreck shut down the eastbound lanes for hours.  Fortunately, no one was injured.
