How Fire Extinguishers are Made
A pile of pressure valves ready to be put in fire extinguishers.

We all have to carry at least one of these things in the truck cab. Did you ever wonder how it was conceived and manufactured before you put it in your truck? This video from The Science Channel program “How It’s Made” gives you a step by step look at how they’re put together and why they look like they do.

Things we found out during the video:

  • It’s not a fully automated process. In fact, construction of a fire extinguisher requires the work of many people.
  • The bright red paint is put on using electroplating technique.
  • The main fire fighting element inside the tank is a kind of ammonia.
  • The pressure inside a fire extinguisher is around 6x that of a car tire.

Anyway, have a look see at how this lifesaving tool gets from parts to payload.

Which reminds us – is your fire extinguisher up to date and in good shape? Make sure, truck drivers!
