Think you know all there is to know about NASCAR? Did you know that NASCAR’s roots began with bootlegging. In the 1930’s bootleggers supped up their car’s engines, in case they had to outrun authorities. The car’s outside looked like any other stock car, which is where stock cars got its name.
According to the NASCAR website, In December of 1947, Bill France Sr., organized a meeting of stock car drivers at The Streamline Hotel to discuss problems with stock car racing.
On February 15, 1948, the first NASCAR sanctioned race happened at Daytona. Days later, on February 21, 1948, National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR was incorporated.
Jim Roper of Great Bend, Kan., was the winner of the first ever NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) event, held at the Charlotte (N.C.) Fairgrounds on June 19, 1949.
