Health rumors! Nothing like freaking everyone out for no reason! Check out this list of debunked health myths!
Myth: Drinking water helps you lose weight.
Fact: Drinking water does not actually help you lose weight. However, if you’re drinking water to help yourself fill up – which could prevent you from snacking or eating extra food, it can definitely be helpful on the path to weight loss!
Myth: Knuckle-cracking causes arthritis.
Fact: Studies show that cracking your knuckles doesn’t have any sort of effect on the development of arthritis. However – it CAN eventually cause you to have a weaker grip, less hand strength, hand swelling, and less dexterity later on in life.
Myth: Baby carrots are preserved with bleach.
Fact: Baby carrots are rinsed with a chlorine wash which is both approved, and recommended by the FDA. The chlorine wash kills food borne illness causing bacteria (such as salmonella and E. coli). Most precut fruit is sanitized with a similar solution!
Myth: Muscle can turn into fat.
Fact: Muscle and fat are two different types of tissue – and it’s not possible for them to morph into one another. It IS true that once you hit your 30’s muscle mass starts to decrease (unless you strength train) – and fat can appear to develop in the same areas that muscle used to appear.
Myth: The ‘5-Second Rule’ is a sanitary option.
Fact: No way José! Bacteria transfer is instantaneous – once your foot has made contact with a dirty surface, it’s contaminated. Period. Studies show that your reflexes have no bearing on the amount of bacteria your food picks up.
