CLOSED: 3.5 Miles Of I-43 And The Leo Frigo Bridge Of Green Bay, WI

Published:

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Northeast Region of Green Bay has announced that the Leo Frigo Bridge as well as 3.5 mile long portion of I-43 from Atkinson Road to Webster Avenue is closed to traffic (both northbound and southbound).

A detour using WIS 172 has been established.

Northbound traffic: Exit to WIS 172 westbound, to US 41northbound, to I-43 northbound.
Southbound traffic: Exit to WIS 172 eastbound to I-43 southbound.

As it stands, there has been no announcement of a reopening. The bridge and roadway have been closed due to the sagging of a large stretch of pavement. The bridge which is 150-200 yards in length has dipped 3 feet across all four lanes due to the sinkage. The bridge was closed early this morning, there have been no injuries.

This highway system is designated as a federal and state long truck route. Although the bridge, which was built in 1980, is not in danger of collapse – the closure will cause a major inconvenience for motorists as 40,000 vehicles cross the Leo Frigo Bridge every day.
