LITTLE ROCK (6-5) – Damage to beams supporting the Stanton Road overpass has required an immediate closure of the bridge, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.
Shortly after 1:00 p.m. this yesterday, a backhoe being transported on a trailer eastbound on Interstate 30 struck several of the beams causing enough damage to warrant an immediate closure of the overpass.
Traffic is not affected on Interstate 30 at this time. The Stanton Road overpass will remain closed for an unknown amount of time until crews can assess the damage and make repairs. The AHTD is working with the city of Little Rock to determine alternate routes for local commuters.
Approximately 3,350 vehicles cross the Stanton Road overpass daily, which is 228 feet long and was constructed in 1960.
The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department will provide an update as information becomes available.
