Each year, Atlas Van Lines conducts the annual King of the Road survey of its drivers.  The survey asks drivers about their favorite restaurants, motels, cell phone provider and much more.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (September 13, 2013) — Today’s professional truck drivers are more environmentally conscious and staying more connected than ever through technology, according to a new survey of Atlas Van Lines drivers. Now in its ninth year, Atlas Van Lines’ King of the Road Survey provides insights from one of the nation’s leading moving company’s drivers on their preferred brands, use of technology and eco-friendly habits while navigating the roads.

“With the millions of miles our seasoned road warriors log each year, our drivers have very informed opinions on everything from the best tires to the states with the best rest stops,” said Glen Dunkerson, chairman and CEO of Atlas World Group. “The annual King of the Road survey allows our drivers to share their expertise with others on the road and helps the industry identify emerging trends within the profession.”

This year’s King of the Road survey highlights include:

Drivers are doing their part to be more eco-friendly while on the road. For the first time in the survey’s history, more than half of Atlas’ drivers (53 percent) seek out recycling opportunities for aluminum, plastic and glass trash items they accumulate throughout their travels. Furthermore, 38 percent are taking advantage of reusable drink containers and 33 percent are using reusable grocery bags. Drivers also reported exercising other means of reducing their carbon footprint, including the use of toll road PrePasses, generators and biodiesel fuel.

Smartphone usage amongst drivers is on the rise. Sixty-six percent of drivers surveyed use smartphones, a six percent increase from 2012, with the iPhone outpacing Android phones (58 percent to 38 percent) as the smartphone of choice for drivers. Verizon Wireless remains the preferred wireless network of choice for the second consecutive year. Drivers are continuing to use technology to stay more connected while on the road, as the survey saw increases across the board on frequent email and Internet usage. More than three-fourths of drivers check email daily; 84 percent access Internet on a daily basis and 56 percent of drivers check social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter every day. With many drivers spending 20 weeks or more on the road, today’s technological advances are helping drivers stay connected – no matter their geographic location.

Favorite brands and other highway essentials include:

  • Favorite fast food: Subway
  • Best coffee: Dunkin’ Donuts
  • Favorite hotel chain: Super 8
  • Best truck stop chains: Flying J and Pilot
  • Favorite on-the-road snack: Fresh fruit
  • States with the best rest stops: Florida and Ohio
  • Most effective antacid: Tums
  • Favorite on-the-road music genre: Country
  • Best tires: Michelin
  • Favorite motor oil: Shell Rotella
  • Best tractor: Freightliner

The King of the Road Survey results are revealed in conjunction with Atlas Van Lines’ annual driver appreciation event, known as BRAVO (Boosting Recognition of Atlas Van Operators) Week, which is scheduled for Sept. 16-20. This week-long affair takes place at participating Atlas agencies around the United States and Canada and recognizes the hardworking drivers who travel across the country and interact with Atlas Van Lines’ customers on a daily basis.
