Maine DOT Urgers Motorists To Be On The Lookout For Moose

Five moose-car crashes in three days have prompted the Maine Department of Transportation to issue a warning to motorists to be on the lookout for moose, especially while driving in the northern areas of the state.

According to the Maine DOT press release, the crashes have occurred on Route 27 in Wyman Township, Route 4 in Sandy River Plantation, Route 16 in Coplin Plantation and Route 4 in Rangeley.

“Those driving the roads, especially in the early morning and evening hours, are encouraged to drive with extreme caution,” Lt. David Rackliffe said. “Moose can be frightened by the sound of your approaching vehicle and run into the roadway.”

The state DOT says that moose crashes lead to extensive, costly damage to the vehicle and often the death of the moose.  None of the recent wrecks resulted in injury to the driver or passengers.

The department reminds drivers to use caution and give full attention to driving and wear their seat belt.
