Tanker Explosion Shuts Down Interstate 81 and Route 322 ‘Indefinitely’

At approximately 6:10 a.m., a tanker, fully loaded with diesel fuel, wrecked and overturned on the Interstate 81 northbound ramp to Route 322 in Swatara Township, Pennsylvania.

The tanker then caught fire and multiple explosions occurred.  The 52-year-old truck driver escaped with minor burns.  He was transported to Harrisburg Hospital.

The interstate and the roads surrounding the area will remain closed “indefinitely,” while crews work to inspect the ramp.

The following roads are closed until further notice:

  • Interstate 81 north and southbound near mile marker 67;
  • the I-81 north ramp to 322 West,
  • the ramp from 81 S to Cameron St,
  • the ramp from 322 E to Cameron st, and Cameron st to 322 w.
