Asleep At the Wheel is the brainchild of songwriter, guitarist and recording engineer Ray Benson. He formed it with a close friend in West Virginia, but after being signed to a record deal, they were convinced to move to Austin by one Willie Nelson. Benson said it was one of the best decisions of his life.
Over the years they have charted more than 20 hits in just as many albums, and have cultivated a healthy dose of respect from other country and blues musicians like Tim McGraw, Dixie Chicks, Lyle Lovett, Merle Haggard, and George Strait.
This orchestrated rendition of the classic road song Route 66 was performed live at a Texas music festival a few years ago. Enjoy, truck drivers!
