Truck Fire Shuts Down Interstate 40 In Arkansas

Published:

According to Arkansas KTHV,  all lanes of Interstate 40 at the Crystal Hill Road overpass were shut down for hours due to a truck crash and fire.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40.

Investigators believe the truck struck the overpass, then caught on fire. The flames were so intense that the pavement caught on fire.

The flames engulfed areas of the overpass, as well.

“The main concern for authorities now is the structure of the overpass itself. The support for the bridge was heavily damaged in the fire. Officials are evaluating whether it is safe for travelers to pass under the bridge,” KTHV reported.

The eastbound lanes have reopened, but the westbound lanes may be shut down for hours.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.  Fox 16 reported that the truck driver sustained severe burns and was airlifted to a hospital.
