UPDATE: Authorities Working To Identify Driver Who Perished At An Indiana Rest Area

UPDATE: The driver has been identified as Baljinder Dhami, 30, of Brampton, Ontario.  Dhami was a driver for Karnipal Goods of Ontario, Canada.

Authorities are working to determine the identity of a driver who likely died from smoke inhalation when his truck caught on fire at a Delaware County, Indiana rest area.

At approximately 5:40 a.m. on Wednesday morning, authorities were called to the southbound Interstate 69 rest area at mile marker 50 because of a truck fire.

When emergency personnel arrived, it was too late, the truck and its driver were charred beyond recognition.

According to the Delaware County Deputy Coroner, Clarence Brooks, the truck is registered in Ontario, Canada.  It was parked on an exit ramp.  The driver was the truck’s only occupant.

The driver was found in the bunk and probably “probably died of smoke inhalation before the explosion,” Brooks said.

The coroner said he will have to use dental records to positively identify the driver.

The rest area remains closed at this time.

This is a developing story.
