If Utah HB 103 passes, teens who are caught on their phones while driving will face a $50 fine and a misdemeanor charge.
On Wednesday, the House committee voted unanimously to pass the bill.
Rep. Lee Perry, R-Perry, “described the measure as a best practice targeted at reducing potential problems for teen-age drivers. A similar measure passed last session but did not make it through the House before the session ended. Lawmakers did ban texting while driving last year,” the Standard reported.
Perry says the law only applies to minors because by adulthood, drivers can choose how to drive responsibly.
Utah currently has laws against texting and driving, but this would be the first bill that would ban talking while driving.
The bill will now move to the House floor for a vote.
