A one-day campaign by the Virginia State Police, called Operation Land, Air & Speed, resulted in more than 1,200 citations.

On Saturday, September 14, 2013, Virginia Sate Police conducted a one-day enforcement initiative along approximately 870 miles of Interstates 81, 95, 85 and 64.  The interstates were “saturated” by troopers.

In total, 1,008 speeding citations and 255 reckless driving citations were issued.  In addition, one drunk driver was arrested and 62 seat belt citations were issued. A total of 9 drug and felony arrests were made as well.

“The comprehensive enforcement project is aimed at preventing and reducing traffic crashes and deaths on Virginia’s interstates caused by impaired, reckless, distracted and/or speeding motorists,” the Virginia State Police stated.

State police said operational duties on other interstates, primary and secondary roads were not affected during the campaign.

“Funding for the enforcement initiative was provided through federal highway safety monies. Funds generated from summonses issued by Virginia State Police go directly to court fees and the state’s Literary Fund, which benefits public school construction, technology funding and teacher retirement,” Virginia State Police stated.
