I-74 Salt Kettle Rest Area Closed For Another Six Weeks

Published:

The often-shutdown Salt Kettle Rest Area on Interstate 74 east of Oakwood should reopen in six weeks, Illinois Department of Transportation said.

The rest stop closed six monte ago for restroom renovations, including improved access for the disabled.

This is the third time in six years the rest area has been shut down for an extended period of time. It first shut down in January 2012 for more than six months due to septic issues.

Salt Kettle is the first rest area for traffic coming into Illinois from Indiana. The next- closest stop for westbound drivers is at mile marker 158 about 50 miles away.

An Illinois Department of Transportation official says the project is on schedule with the rest area to reopen by mid-September.
