Arizona Rest Area Reopens

Published:

The Salt River Canyon rest area on US 60 between Globe and Show Low, Arizona has reopened to travelers.

Due to funding issues, the rest area has been closed since 2011.  In 2013, AzDOT announced a partnership with a private company to help rehab and manage select Arizona rest areas.

The rest area now has renovated bathrooms and solar panels.

The rest area will be operated by the Infrastructure Corporation of America, a private rest-area management company.

“I am pleased to see ADOT’s first public-private partnership get underway,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said in 2013. “This project shows that it’s possible to fund transportation projects with non-traditional funding sources. This partnership is an innovative approach to both business and transportation in which everyone benefits, especially those who use Arizona’s rest areas. Public-private partnerships are becoming more common in moving transportation projects forward as transportation funding decreases, both in Arizona and on a national level.”
