The body of a missing truck driver was believed to have been found today (Thursday, June 26th) as of 4:30 p.m. in the Augusta Canal off of I-20 in Georgia.

According to reports, the body was found 300 feet from the initial point of impact and approximately 10 feet below the water’s service. The search took a total of 12 hours.

At the current time, the identity of the driver is unknown.

His truck was presumed to have gone over the I-20 eastbound canal bridge near Exit 1 this morning around 3:15 a.m. The rig was completely submerged upon discovery and the driver was nowhere to be found.

The search had traffic backed up along the interstate as first responders and rescue teams conducted the search this morning. The Augusta Utilities Department played a role in keeping water levels low, and halting canal pumps.

This is not the first instance of an 18-wheeler winding up in this canal that runs below I-20. This has happened several times before – in the exact same spot.

All lanes of I-20 are expected to be opened by tomorrow.
