If you’re traveling through Denver this weekend, you may want to plan on avoiding Interstate 25. Colorado Department of Transportation is telling all motorists to avoid I-25 at all costs due to major road closures.
The interstate will be closed down in both directions between Santa Fe and 6th Avenue beginning Friday night at 10 p.m. until Saturday at 8 a.m. The road closes again Saturday at 10 p.m. and won’t reopen until Monday at 5 a.m. CDOT recommends drivers use alternative routes I-70, I-225, C-470 and E-470.
For those traveling on I-25, both north and southbound drivers will be detoured to US 6 which reconnects with I- 25. Northbound I-25 drivers will be detoured at Santa Fe Drive.
Southbound I-25 drivers will be detoured east or west on Sixth Avenue. Santa Fe will also be closed at Mississippi Avenue. Those drivers will be detoured north onto Lincoln Avenue.
The closure will eventually improve traffic flow through the “Gap Lane Project,” which plans to make room for an extra northbound lane by narrowing all existing lanes and shoulders.
CDOT says the weekend closure will save the department 20 construction days, since crews will be demolishing the north bridge of US 6 over I-25 which would normally require the highway to be closed on 20 different nights.
