Chicago Bridge And Viaduct Clearance Guide

Published:

In light of the many recent bridge clearance incidents, we’ve gathered viaduct-clearance information for the City of Chicago (prepared by the CDOT). The attached list indicates up-to date clearance heights along Chicago streets and highways.

However, please note that the City of Chicago does not guarantee accuracy, nor does it assume responsibility for discrepancies which exist, or damages arising from a motorist’s failure to exercise due caution and care.

The CDOT is responsible for over 300 bridge and viaduct structures – this includes 37 operable moveable bridges.

Viaduct clearance heights are posted by CDOT at each viaduct along the streets and highways in Chicago. The posted clearances serve as a guideline and are advisory only.

The following clearance information is listed in sequential order by street – numerical order precedes alphabetical street names.

•  NP: not posted, the clearance is over 14 feet 6 inches
•  EX: actual clearance is posted with “Exactly” on sign
•  SR: structure was removed/no longer exists
•  UC: under construction

Please contact the CDOT Division of Engineering for further information: 312.744.3520.
