Driver Blinded By Sun, Rear-Ends Motorist On South Portland Turnpike

Published:

MAINE: Fredrick Smith, a Kennebunk truck driver was involved in a South Portland accident this morning. Smith reported to authorities that he was blinded by the sun.

Around 8:00 AM his tractor-trailer (which was hauling gasoline) hit a car from behind, pushing it into a pickup truck on the South Portland turnpike spur.

The woman driving the car mentioned some pain in her legs, but was able to get out of her vehicle on her own power.

The truck driver had been heading east on the turnpike when the pickup truck two cars ahead stopped in a traffic jam.

According to the truck driver, he was blinded by sun which prevented him from seeing the car in front of him coming to a stop. He rear-ended the vehicle, sending both the car and the pickup off the roadway.

The turnpike was closed for an hour during the investigation.

The truck driver was not cited.
