Fatal Accident, Involving 1 Truck and 9 Cars, Shuts Down Route 222 in Pennsylvania

An accident involving a truck and 9 other vehicles has claimed the lives of two people and injured nine others.

The accident occurred on Route 222 in Maidencreek Township, Pennsylvania, near Route 73, at approximately 6:30 this morning

According to police, the truck driver was headed southbound on Route 222 and collided with cars that were stopped at a stoplight.  The driver then veered over and struck two cars that were parked in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot.

“After ramming a line of southbound vehicles at the Route 73 traffic signal, the rig careened into several northbound vehicles before striking the sign outside the Dunkin’ Donuts along the highway, police and witnesses said,” the Reading Eagle reported.

Two people died at the scene and nine others were transported to the hospital.  The truck driver, who has not been identified, was also taken to the hospital.  There is no word on the extent of the injuries.

Route 222 was shut down for hours while crews worked to clean up the scene. The accident is under investigation.
