The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) today released the results of Roadcheck 2014.
Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement campaign on trucks and buses. Each year, more than 1,000 trucks and buses are inspected each hour, for a 72-hour time period.
“The inspections conducted during the three-day International Roadcheck event are the same types of inspections conducted every day by hard-working CVSA-certified inspectors,” said CVSA President Sgt. Thomas Fuller with the New York State Police. “International Roadcheck provides the opportunity to promote safety improvement efforts and accomplishments that enforcement and industry achieve every day.”
During the 3-day inspection blitz, CMV inspectors throughout North America inspected 73,475 trucks and buses.
Here’s a breakdown of the numbers:
-73,475 buses and trucks were inspected. Of those, 49,656 were subjected to a Level 1 inspection. A Level 1 inspection is a 37-point inspection. A Level 1 inspection is ” an examination of driver’s record of duty status and the safety of the vehicle. Drivers are required to provide items such as their license, endorsements, medical card and hours-of-service documentation, and are checked for seat belt usage and the use of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the braking system, coupling devices, exhaust system, frame, fuel system, lights, safe loading, steering mechanism, suspension, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels and rims, windshield wipers, and emergency exits on buses,” the CVSA states.
-Of the 49,656 Level 1 inspections, 23% were plead OOS.
-72,415 driver inspections were conducted. 4.8% were found with OOS violations, and 825 seatbelt violations were found.
This year, inspections focused their efforts on hazmat regulatory compliance.
-A total of 5,738 hazmat vehicles were inspected. 919 were found to have OOS violations and 172 hazmat drivers were found to have OOS violations.
“International Roadcheck is a very important three-day event that takes place once per year,” said Stephen Keppler, executive director, CVSA. But let’s not forget that every day, approximately 13,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors at thousands of locations across North America help keep our roads safe by performing truck and bus inspections.”
