Stolen Trailer Recovered During Roadside Inspection

A $30,000 trailer stolen four years ago from a Rutland County trucking business has been recovered by inspectors during a recent roadside check, according to The Vermont Motor Vehicles Department.

The tractor-trailer, operated by Hill & Son Trucking in South Newbury, N.H., was headed east when stopped by inspectors for a commercial vehicle safety check at the Fair Haven scales on U.S. 4.

During the check, inspectors found the original public vehicle identification number missing, along with specific markings that could identify the trailer as belonging to Colton Enterprises, Inc. The trailer was reported stolen in Pittsfield in August 2010, DMV Capt. Jake Elovirta said.

Inspectors were able to match the stolen trailer’s number with a secondary vehicle identification number on the trailer. The driver was questioned and released without charges. The trailer was seized, and state police alerted in New Hampshire where the vehicle was registered, according to the DVV.

New Hampshire officials reported that Scott Hill, 51, owner of Hill & Sons Trucking, initially tried to escape capture, but surrendered later to state police in Concord, N.H. Hill has been charged with receiving stolen property and concealing the identity of a vehicle.

The 1999 custom semi-trailer has a movable floor which can move cargo from the front to rear of the trailer without the body of the trailer having to be elevated.

Vermont DMV’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit is continuing to investigate with New Hampshire State Police. Elovirta told the Burlington Free Press that more charges may be filed.
