Florida Bill To Increase Speed Limits – Vetoed

Published:

Just days following the funeral of state trooper Chelsea Richard, a bill (SB 392) allowing drivers to drive 75 miles per hour on Florida highways has been vetoed by Governor, Rick Scott.

Two others were killed in the crash which changed the bill’s course, including a tow truck driver, and his friend.

Prior to the accident, the AAA Auto Club had addressed Scott with a letter about Florida’s ‘free pass’ law which allows drivers to speed 5 miles over the posted limit without receiving a ticket. This essentially increases the speed limit, and giving motorists the impression that it’s alright to drive up to 85 miles per hour – since they can go 80 without risking a fine.

The bill would have increased speed limits on 1,500 miles of highway including I-4, I-10, I-75, I-95, Suncoast Parkway, and the Florida Turnpike.

State troopers are also urging the Scott to reduce the speed limit on I-75 to 55 during wet conditions.
