Sinkhole Shuts Down Highway 165 Near Stevinson, California Until Friday

Published:

Both sides of Highway 165 off Canal Street in the Stevinson, California area could be closed until Friday, due to a sinkhole in the southbound side of the road, according to Caltrans officials.

Currently, crews are assessing the sinkhole and making repairs to the pavement portion. One Caltrans spokesperson said that if crews find additional problems, the highway could be closed past Friday.

Detours on Highway 165 are currently set up from the junction of Highway 40 to Westside Boulevard about 3.3 miles north of Highway 140.

Motorists in the area should expect up to 15-minute delays as crews control one-way traffic from around 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., warns Caltrans.

Immediate repairs to the road will be a temporary fix, officials said. The affected section of the road will permanently be fixed after Nov. 1 as part of an ongoing $13.9 million Highway 140 / Highway 165 Stevinson Rehabilitation Project.

According to Caltrans, the rehabilitation project will also include additional repairs to the roadway – the shoulders will be widened, the roadway slope will be corrected and utility poles relocated.

The project began in May and spans from Highway 140 to just south of Westside Boulevard.
