Truck Driver Stabbed on Interstate 84 in Oregon, Suspect in Custody

According to a press release from the Oregon State Police, on Monday afternoon, a truck driver was stabbed on Interstate 84 in Oregon, about 15 miles west of Ontario.

On August 25, 2014, the truck driver, Charles Vanzante, 63, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 when a suspect driving a Buick Lacrosse began ramming his vehicle into the side of Vanzante’s tanker.

Vanzante pulled his truck onto the shoulder of the road.  The Buick driver, later identified as Dustin Leroy Rotter, also pulled over and exited his vehicle.  Rotter allegedly then allegedly walked over to Vanzante’s truck, opened the door and began stabbing Vanzante.

Vanzante suffered multiple stab wounds.

Rotter then “fled up a hill south of the scene and then returned back to the truck where he briefly engaged in a second struggle with Vanzante. He then was surrounded by several citizens outside the truck and convinced to stay as OSP troopers began arriving at the scene and took the suspect into custody at gunpoint,” the Oregon State Police reported.

An Oregon State Patrol lieutenant provided medical care to Vanzante until paramedics arrived.

Vanzante was transported by air ambulance to a Boise, Idaho hospital.  He is being treated for multiple stab wounds to the chest and stomach area.  His injuries are considered non-life threatening.

Rotter is being charged with Attempted Murder, Assault in the First Degree, Reckless Driving, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. Additional charges may be pending. The vehicle was confirmed stolen out of Pasco, Washington, in a reported carjacking on August 24.
