Westbound Virginia I-66 (mile marker 11) reopened late yesterday afternoon after an accident which involved a gasoline tanker.
According to the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Friday. A westbound Toyota Corolla lost control on I-66, spun, and struck a tanker (also traveling West) which ran off the interstate, and overturned as a result of the accident.
The tanker driver, identified as 61-year-old Warren E. Wood (of Broadway, Virginia) died at the scene. Police say he had been wearing his seatbelt.
The tanker had been loaded with 8,000 gallons of fuel – but fortunately did not rupture.
Traffic is reported to have been congested in the area due to flooding which had occurred around the same time.
The driver of the Corolla, 23-year-old Hea Yon Kim (of Stephens City, Virginia) was not injured, and will be facing reckless driving charges.
