A woman from Carlsile, Pa., has been arrested for posing as a physician and administering illegal physicals to truck drivers.
According to reports, Joann E. Wingate, 56, fraudulently used a Philadelphia psychiatrist’s name and medical license number to administer 16 exams from her home in South Middleton Township. For at least two other physicals, she used her own chiropractic license number which had been suspended last year for advertising violations.
The investigation began after one California truck driver told police that the woman who called herself “Dr. Wingate” picked him up on an old, blue Ford Tempo and drove him to her house for the physical. He later found out that she faxed the results on invalid forms to the California Department of Transportation.
Wingate is in jail on counts of forgery, identity theft, theft by deception, impersonating a professional and fraudulent business practices.
According to officials, Wingate had been working the scam for many years and may have more victims. Anyone who believes they are a victim or has information about the case should call state police at 717-254-4701.
