The number crunchers at Google Maps took it upon themselves to analyze traffic data from the past few Thanksgivings — and they’re passing these holiday travel hacks on to drivers! Here’s what you need to know.
- The worse traffic day will be Wednesday for almost every city. The exceptions? Tuesday has the most holiday traffic in Boston, while Honolulu, Providence, and San Francisco all have their highest traffic on Saturday.
- The worst city in the U.S. for Thanksgiving traffic? Los Angeles. Expect gridlock all week long. After Los Angeles, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Philadelphia are runners up for heaviest holiday traffic cities.
- You’ll see the lightest traffic on — you guessed it — Thanksgiving Day. Most of the traffic you do encounter on Thursday will be from noon through 2 p.m.
- If you have to make a choice between driving Saturday and driving Sunday, pick Saturday. Traffic will be 40% lighter.
