8 States Join Forces To Create Safe Trucker Parking System

The Federal Highway Administration has awarded a $25 million grant to eight states to fund a project that will give truck drivers accurate, real-time information about safe truck parking throughout the Midwest.

Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin will use the grant money to give truckers up to date information about available parking via electronic highway signs, websites, and smartphone apps.

The project, referred to as the Truck Parking Information and Management System (TPIMS), will focus on helping drivers find truck parking close to freeways so that they can save time and fuel when they near the end of their service hours.

A representative from IDOT hopes that the TPIMS is a step forward for safety and efficiency for truckers and motorists: “This grant will allow our states to work together to develop a tool that is a positive step in creating consistent, reliable expectations for the transportation system as our customers move throughout the Midwest.”
