MDOT Blames 193 Vehicle Pileup In Part On Cable Barriers

Published:

Michigan officials have released a 94-page report that puts some of the blame for the 193 vehicle pileup on I-94  last January on cable barriers.

The pileup, which killed a Canadian truck driver and injured 18 others, involved a fireworks truck and a formic acid. The report named the portion of I-94 where the pileup occurred the most dangerous highway in the state.

According to the report, the cable barriers constrained the flow of traffic after the pileup began and caused more vehicles to become involved in the crash. The authors of the report recommended moving the cable barriers from away from the inside shoulder to closer to the inside of the median.

Other recommendations included in the report are:

  • More state police patrolling during severe weather
  • More electronic signage
  • Better lighting
  • The use of more advanced ice removal techniques
  • The addition of a lane on eastbound and westbound I-94 between mile marker 79 and the I-94 Business Loop

The study also noted that 65% of winter weather crashes on I-94 could be attributed to driving too fast for the weather conditions.

You can see the cable barrier in the “as it happens” video of the pileup below.
