Police in Wellington say that a New Zealand trucker deserves a medal after he drove dangerous flaming cargo away from homes and onto the freeway.
The accident, which shut down southbound lanes of State Highway 1 near the Paremata roundabout, happened when a truck hauling paint thinner, batteries, and aerosols caught fire. Police say that the driver, who made it out of the accident safely, realized that the truck was on fire and made the decision to drive to away from the nearby homes.
Authorities say that based on the condition of the leaves and trees near the burning truck, the damage to the homes could have been severe.
Emergency personnel were able to contain the fire. No injuries were reported.
